Any Way the Wind Blows

On the very first day of September 2016, a mean, nasty girl came into my town uninvited and unleashed her unholy fury upon us.   She stole our electricity, stripped away our internet connections, ripped our trees from the ground and spit them back out at us.  She shut us down.  She made us tense.  She closed our schools and our businesses.  She was a Category One Be-otch with a really stupid name.  Hurricane Hermine.  Yep, she was mean alright.  We had not seen a weather event this bad since 1985 when Kate made landfall less than 30 miles South of us.

My family didn’t suffer nearly as much as many did thanks to our six year old Generac Generator that is wired to our natural gas supply.  It ran our home from Thursday until our power was restored five days later.  She’s a category ten with a pretty name, Genevieve. Generator Genevieve laughed at Hermine and showered light upon us.  She ran our air conditioning units during those 90 plus degree days and kept our refrigerators and freezers humming.  She kissed us goodnight five times and assured us with her strong, loud engine, that she would not forsake us.  And when those electrical currents were finally racing through the repaired lines in our neighborhood again, she simply got quiet and rested.

In those internet-less and cable-less days, I was able to melt a whole lot of glass.  Again, thanks to Genevieve, my kiln and oxygen concentrator ran effortlessly.  Because my show season starts this month, I have to replace inventory I sold in the Spring.   I was also able to get some stringing done, and will finish the rest this weekend.  Meanwhile, I’ll be working on this website.  And because these beads were born thanks to my Generac, I'm naming this piece "Genevieve's Hurricane”…
