Just Another Day

Valentines Day

Mark Holt and I do NOT celebrate this day.

I always think back to our first Valentines Day as a couple. We were at that stage in our relationship where we couldn't wait to be together and my heart would race when he was near and I blushed when he touched my face or just stared at me without saying a word.

As the big heart day approached, I knew I had to give him something impressive and romantic. He'd surely get me something expensive and exquisite. So, I paid $100 for a gorgeous bath robe I hoped I'd get to see him in one day and ignored the fact that I'd have to eat Ramen for a month or so since I had very little to live on after paying bills.

When the big day rolled around, he set a fine table and fed me like I was a queen.

And that was that.

There was no pretty little package or gift bag with overflowing tissue paper with a treasure hidden underneath. No vase full of roses, chocolates or a cute stuffed bear for me to cuddle with in his absence. Nothing but a puzzled face when I gave up waiting and handed him his present, all wrapped in stupid paper with shiny hearts and an over achieving bow.

He hadn't expected that.

He told me he was sorry for not getting me a Valentines present and hoped I'd forgive him but that every day with me was special, not just this day.

Then I regretted with everything in me that I went out and spent money I didn't have just because of an occasion that makes you feel obligated. What a waste!!!

Then again, he still wears that robe after all these years.

No, we don't celebrate this day. We celebrate EVERY day.

My heart still flutters and my cheeks still turn red and the fact that it's probably just menopause at this point doesn't make being with him any less wonderful than it was all those years ago.

And Cupid had nothing to do with us falling in love. This was all God above and the best answer to prayer I've ever gotten.

So Happy Valentines day to all of you out there.

And Happy Just Another Day to me and Mark Holt.

I wonder if he's wearing anything under that bath robe...
