Baby Steps and Giant Leaps
Nicholas was sleeping peacefully when I arrived this morning. His room was mostly dark and quiet, a stark contrast from the ICU with its whirring machines and beeping monitors.
His view here isn't as pretty but there's a blanket of snow lying on the ground between the wings. This unit is directly across from the ICU. I can see it through the windows.
I See You
On my body this morning was a pair of dark gray leggings, wool knee high socks and fake fur lined boots, one thermal undershirt, one light v-neck sweater, one puffy sleeveless vest, one large chunky winter scarf, my big long wool coat, a neck wrap, a face mask and my winter hat with the giant pom pom on top.
Mark asked "Where are you under there? I can't see you".
I'll CU Later
Nicholas got kicked out of Intensive Care just before 4:00 this afternoon. His new room is not chock full of medical equipment, so it's a lot easier on a mother's eyes.
Surgery Day (Updated frequently)
We checked in at 5:30 this morning and from the moment we arrived, the ball started rolling. This place is so amazing.
I was with him up until they wheeled him away to the OR at 7:35. Before they took him, they let me take off my mask so I could hug him and kiss his check. I said, "I love you, baby" and he replied, "I love you too, Mom. You're gonna be just fine". God bless him.

One Day, Day One
Yesterday went better than I had anticipated. That is until the last leg of our journey. Our plane had a "mechanical issue" and by the time it was resolved, the wings had to be de-iced and guess what? So did all the other planes that had wings because, DUH, Polar Vortex!
While we were waiting for a Lyft, Nicholas invited me to play in the snow with him and for a good 5 minutes, my stress melted away while the snow promised not to because 5 minutes of snow play is not nearly long enough for a snow virgin.
Tagalong
Today's the day.
Our flight leaves at 2:26 this afternoon.
Because of something they call a Polar Vortex that awaits us in Rochester, our luggage is twice what it should be. As I write this, the current tempature is -17 with a wind chill factor of -34. The high today is -2 and when we land tonight just after 10:00, it'll feel like -17. Our coats, hats and gloves alone bought all the real estate in one large bag.

Nicholas Heart Blogs and Updates (Ongoing and In Order)
When I wrote Electric Heart, I had no idea we'd be taking this journey. As I continue to blog about it, I'll also post the links on this blog entry in the order they are written.
Nutshell
I wrote my New Years Eve blog and read it three times. It was dark, ugly and deep. I named it what I did becuase one of the last lines said, "And that, my friends, is 2020 in a nutshell".
No one needs to read that. Everyone already knows. My husband and son both agreed I should sit on a few more hours before I hit the publish button. I'm glad I listened.
I fixed it.
I like it. I hope you do too.

I thought 2019 was bad. I blogged about it HERE.
